By Kristin Waite-Labott | RN, BSN, CARN

Are you struggling with substances? Or are you concerned about a healthcare partner who is struggling?

Believe it or not, this is frequently seen in high-functioning and excellent clinicians. The signs can be subtle, but knowing what to look for can save a career—or a life.

Concerning Signs to Watch For

  • Work Patterns: Increased absences (often associated with alcohol) or picking up extra shifts/showing up when not scheduled (often associated with opioids).
  • Isolation: Frequent bathroom breaks or unexplained disappearances during shifts.
  • Medication Behaviors: Volunteering to administer narcotics, heavy wastage of drugs, suspicious drug log entries, or discrepancies.
  • Physical Signs: Wearing long sleeves when inappropriate, shakiness, falling asleep during slower times, changes in appearance (weight loss/gain, hygiene).
  • Mood & Performance: Personality changes, mood swings, underperformance, or practice errors.

You are not alone. There is help available that understands the unique pressures of the medical profession.
