Concerning signs include:
- Increased work absences (alcohol use disorder)
- Picking up overtime or showing up when not scheduled to work (opioid use disorder)
- Frequent bathroom breaks or bathroom visits
- Volunteering to administer pain medications to patients, typically narcotics
- Suspicious drug log entries or cancellations
- Drug discrepancies
- Altered verbal or phone medical orders
- Reports that patients do not have effective pain control
- Heavy wastage of drugs
- Underperformance
- Wearing long sleeves when inappropriate
- Personality changes or mood swings
- Changes in appearance
- Falling asleep during slower times
- Shakiness
- Practice errors
