The Transformative Power of Coaching for Physician Assistants
By Klaus Grim | PA-C & Coach
“I soon realized that there was a whole part of myself and a vision of my authentic self that I had overlooked.”
During one of my clinical rotations in PA school, coaching was introduced as part of the curriculum. Initially skeptical, I was surprised by the profound impact it had on my personal and professional development.
Up to that point, I had thought my life goals were simply to navigate clinical rotations, graduate from PA school, and secure a good job. However, I soon realized that there was a whole part of myself and a vision of my authentic self that I had overlooked. This revelation propelled me to reevaluate my aspirations and reconsider the life goals that led me to where I was.

What Actually Is Coaching?
Coaching is a transformative process that involves a collaborative partnership between a coach and a client, aimed at achieving personal and professional growth. Through active listening, powerful questioning, and supportive guidance, coaching helps individuals clarify their goals, overcome obstacles, and unlock their full potential.
Unlike mentoring or consulting, which may involve providing advice or expertise, coaching is centered on empowering clients to find their own answers. And unlike therapy, which typically focuses on addressing past traumas, coaching is forward-looking and action-oriented.
My Own Battle with Burnout
I am a Physician Assistant who found comfort and transformation through coaching. After graduating PA school in 2018, I entered the healthcare workforce eager to make a difference. As a PA practicing in emergency medicine and urgent care, I never anticipated the toll that stress and burnout could take on my well-being.

During the COVID pandemic, I witnessed colleagues succumb to the pressures of the field, and I knew I needed a change. The realities of the job weighed heavily on me—stress, anxiety, and overwhelm impacted my relationships, communication, and joy at work and at home.
Desperate for a solution, I turned to coaching. In 2022, I made the decision to enroll in a reputable coaching school, recognizing the need for personal growth and self-care.
Recognizing the Need for Support
Working with a coach transformed my life, enabling me to rediscover joy, purpose, and fulfillment. Inspired by my own journey, I now help other healthcare professionals do the same.

As a healthcare professional, recognizing the need for support is the first step towards positive change. The role of a PA encompasses heavy workloads, limited autonomy, compensation concerns, and administrative burdens. Whether you’re struggling with burnout or simply feeling disconnected from your goals, coaching can provide the guidance you need.
