Beyond the Bedside: From Midnight Admitter to Student Coach

By Dawn Miller | PA-C & Education Expert

“Let’s rewind to 2005. I was a bright-eyed, but certainly sleep-deprived, PA student doing clinical rotations in Detroit.”

One of those rotations became my first job offer before graduation, a beautiful reminder that every rotation is basically one long job interview.

The secret? Show up early. Ask smart questions. Be the first to volunteer. Study your cases like it’s finals week every week. And always, always, say yes to free food. (That last one’s just good life advice for any age or profession!)

Trial by Fire

My first role? Midnight shift admitter and the floor-call sidekick to a lone intern. We learned by BURN. Orientation was… let’s say, minimalistic. But that solid rotation foundation made me unshakable.

Soon after, I moved into the ICU — all of them. MICU, SICU, CICU, CVICU. It was a crash course in everything, and my resume loved it. During the day I worked. At night I also worked. Cardio consults? Check. Moonlighting in the ED? You bet. Military wellness checks? Yes, I did.

Over the next 12 years, we moved. A lot. Life had its surprises, but my robust clinical background meant I could pivot smoothly. I was always learning, always hustling, and always caffeinated.

The “Now What?” Moment

Then came the day I put my last kiddo on the school bus and thought: “Well… now what?”

So, I dove into the world of medical education. I helped grow a major Qbank into the go-to PA board prep resource. I wasn’t just editing questions; I was connecting with over 500 students and practicing PAs each month, helping with remediation, study plans, and just being a human reminder that you’re not in this alone.

Meanwhile, we did the ultimate 2020 family adventure: six months living in a camper with the kids during COVID. (10/10 do not recommend during a pandemic… but also, 10/10 memories made.)

Despite the moves, the madness, and the mileage, I stayed rooted in clinical practice, most notably 10+ years in heart failure/transplant. I delivered hundreds of COVID vaccinations, joined another hospital system, and simply kept showing up.

My New Mission

But here’s the truth: being a PA is so much more than hospital hallways and clinic rooms. It’s about adaptability, creativity, and connection.

Today, I’ve found my groove helping PA students bridge the gap between classroom overwhelm and clinical confidence. I work one-on-one with students from all walks of life—many managing anxiety, ADHD, or just the crushing weight of imposter syndrome.

So if you’re a student, a new grad, or just feeling a little lost — I see you. I’ve been you. And I’d love to help. Because this PA journey? It’s a wild, rewarding ride. And sometimes the best thing you can do is let someone remind you that you’ve got this.
